Our Females

Our girls play a unique role in shaping each generation of Harman Corgis. They contribute the genetics that influence health, structure, breed type, energy level, and temperament—but their influence does not stop there. They are also the puppies’ first teachers.

From birth, puppies learn from and respond to their mothers. That makes a female’s demeanor and maternal instincts especially important to us. We value girls who are calm, loving, attentive mothers—females who care carefully for their puppies, have good milk production, remain relaxed and quiet around their litters, and know how to gently set appropriate boundaries as their puppies grow.

We consider all of these qualities when deciding which females will become part of our breeding program. Our goal is not only to produce healthy, well-structured Pembroke Welsh Corgis with wonderful temperaments, but also to give each litter the best possible start through a mother who models the qualities we hope to see in her puppies.

Just as much thought goes into when—and how often—our girls are bred. We typically wait until a female is around two years old before she has her first litter, and we breed each female no more than once a year. The number of litters we plan is guided by the families on our waiting list, not simply by the number of females in our program. This means some of our girls may not be bred at all in a given year.
